The Department of Wrong Answers is the first of three departments within Wysing Arts Centre’s new programme for 2011: The Institute of Beyond. The concept of wrong answers will be explored by artists Rob Filby, Laure Prouvost & Francesco Pedraglio, Giles Round and Cally Spooner who will be in residence at Wysing for six weeks from 14 February – 1 April.
To help shape the work created by the artists during the residency period, Wysing will host a number of public events and talks as a platform for different perspectives and ideas. Writer and curator, Francesco Pedraglio, will chair an open discussion about The Concept of Wrong Answers (26 February). The Evolution of Emotions will be unraveled by Dr Philip Barnard of the Medical Research Council’s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge (17 March); Dr Barnard’s research explores how memory, attention, language, body states and emotion work together in the normal healthy, human mind. The ideas and projects of the residency artists, in relation to wrong answers, will be explored through a variety of workshops, talks and events (19 March). And to mark the close of The Department of Wrong Answers there will be a gallery presentation by Rob Filby, Laure Prouvost & Francesco Pedraglio, Giles Round and Cally Spooner from 2 – 17 April.
Donna Lynas, Director of Wysing Arts Centre, says ”In the Institute of Beyond we will be challenging artists and others to embrace new ways of looking at the world and go beyond the limitations of our individual imaginations; to see what emerges through collective thinking and sharing. We are delighted to be starting the year with five amazing artists in residence at Wysing and look forward to seeing what ideas surface with the input of visitors through our events programme through February and March”.
