Caroline Wright makes multi disciplinary work that broadly explores the relationships we each have within the world and with each other, be this through the senses and/or the body as material. Her practice, which employs performance, drawing and installation, addresses the effect of external influences and experiences on our actions and behaviour and transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. She often works site specifically in mediums as diverse as glass and gold as well as the human body, for cities and rural spaces, for galleries, theatres, churches and on desolate uninhabited islands, for audiences of 100 and of one.
Wright takes her audience on a journey, creating stories and worlds in which she invites them to share in her imagination. She explores from the perspective of both observer and participant and is interested in changes that occur when the audience becomes involved in a work and the roles of performer and audience are blurred. Her pieces operate with subtlety, proposing small but significant shifts; performances and installations offer gentle but persistent variation for the artist and audience alike through time. Wright’s works make use of the senses, in particular use of music and the spoken voice, some pieces inclining towards minimal, quiet encounters between the artist and the public.
In her drawn works, Wright is interested in creating a world of clues within a fictitious landscape. Using everyday materials – gel pen and pencil – she works with a series of motifs to shift and challenge our assumptions of the familiar.
Caroline has shown her work extensively across the UK and abroad and is currently working as artist in residence at Trumpington Meadows, Cambridge for Insite Arts. She is developing two new pieces for 2012, Out of Water with Helen Paris a performance and film that will take place on Holkham Beach, Norfolk (a Live Art Collective East project www.liveartcollectiveeast.com) and The Language of Objects, a site specific piece examining the nature of the collected artifact. She is also working on a publication to draw together a body of work examining drawing and writing with artists Helen Rousseau, Phyllida Barlow and poet George Szirtes entitled respond/reply (www.respond/replyblogsport.com). Wright is the recipient of an Artsadmin Bursary, an Arts Council England East Escalator Artist and a founder member of AIR (Artists Interaction and Representation) a membership group of over 16,000 artists.
