Abbas Hashemi in the ‘Window Room’ Curated by Simon Woolham

Filed under: Wysing — simonwoolham @ 12:08 pm

I have chosen to curate a series of photographs by Abbas Hashemi for the next instalment in the ‘Window Room’ to be installed on thursday. I initially chose Abbas because i quite simply wanted to know more about his working ways and background. He had also mentioned to me before about his love of graphics and photography and had said he had never shown them before, so what a great opportunity. As we discussed these images i realised there was a strong narrative and recuring visual motif that almost force you to link these images together. A lot of the images have a double meaning, I am looking forward, as a curator, how and if we link these images together. We have chosen 9 very different images in terms of Abbas’s varied approaches from the graphic to the more straight forward photographs.

  2. I was intrigued, Simon, to see how you could find visual connections between some of my works where I thought the connections were only in my mind - even subconscious at some levels. When commenting on some of the images, you captured the hidden (or not very obvious) symbolic links between them very clearly. This goes to show over and over again how another artist’s view of one’s works can clarify certain aspects of them which were just a blur in the creator’s mind.

It was very satisfying for me to show you my work and talk about the ideas, or share the motivations behind them. Some of these notions don’t belong to recent years but had stayed in my mind as fresh as if they were today’s.

Thank you very much for your time and thoughts. I hope we will receive some interesting feedback from other artists.

    Abbas

  3. simon and abba , yes defenetly, regarding the choice by simon i think is not suprasing as most of the images , i feel are about drawing, potraits [ self and other ] very moving and sculpure or [ actualy sculptural, i love the way they are show here , one can see the conection but most important also what is important . they feel like fragment in the wind , they breez past you . what abba say above about the conection is very true but also it show the amazing generosity, trust and understanding that is developing with in this space and people . i find it very moving , thank you , xx franko

  4. Having had a chance to look at the installation of photographs in the window room over the past few days ( I felt I needed that time to absorb the complexity of imagery) I have been struck by how Abbas has allowed us (the viewer) into his more private world. This series of images seem deeply personal and revealing and i applaud Abbas for having the courage to reveal a certain vulnerability and honesty to ‘us’. I guess this is the great thing about this project space where we can present new ‘brave’ ideas/work within a supportive community. Well done Simon for sensitively allowing this to happen (that mutual trust and understanding is so important.)
