Wysing Arts Centre – Volunteer opportunity

GALLERY ASSISTANTS
Wysing Arts Centre is looking for enthusiastic and reliable volunteer Gallery Assistants to welcome visitors to our unique venue for contemporary visual arts.

Gallery Assistants will work alongside staff to provide visitors with the opportunity to view and explore new ways of thinking in contemporary visual art, in a supportive environment.

Working hours:
Saturday or Sunday 12 to 5pm (during exhibitions) on a rota.
Two sessions per month.

Main Duties
• Greet visitors and provide information about current gallery exhibitions, outdoor artworks, site maps and events.
• Set up and serve refreshments to visitors.
• Provide site tours.
• Encourage participation in education activities.
• To be able to speak to visitors knowledgeably and enthusiastically about the arts centre programme and facilities.
• Sell refreshments and catalogues and to account for cash floats securely.
• Supporting staff with events and talks.
• Answering telephone enquiries and taking messages.
• To be trained in, understand and carry out the evacuation procedure when necessary.
• Ensuring that at all times we provide excellent customer service and health and safety.
• Uphold the arts centre’s policies and procedures including health and safety policy, child protection policy and other customer care measures at all times.
• Have a commitment to valuing diversity and equality, respecting customers and colleagues in all relationships and service delivery.
• Be an ambassador for the arts centre.
• Assisting with evaluation of events and carrying feedback from customers back to the management team and vice versa.
• To undertake other duties as may be reasonably required.

It would also be useful if you have:
• Experience of working with the public.
• An understanding of health and safety practice.
• A lively interest in the arts.
• Experience of working with children.

Training that we will provide
• Induction training, training in health and safety, evacuation and customer care.
• ‘on the job’ training on different volunteer duties.
• Regular one to ones with the operations director.
