Wysing Young Artists in residence (WYA) is a ground breaking talent development programme for young artists and curators aged 16-24 years old. It helps young people in the Eastern region to develop their arts practice in a professional environment and includes workshops and mentoring by professional artists.

Young artists' pop-up exhibition

For the first time Wysing ran the WYA programme as a summer artist-in-residence scheme at its Bourn site in August 2012, giving young people a similar experience to the professional residency artists working there exploring the theme of The Mirror.

Over the month, 14 young artists had workshops with 10 different artists, used the gallery as their own group studio space and attended the same events as professional residency artists.

Young artists led the direction of the programme over the summer.  Participating artist Alice Cole said “This experience has been very rewarding and I have learnt so much from it. It’s been an amazing opportunity to meet professional artists as well as other young artists. I’m really looking forward to our exhibition and the chance to show my work to the public.”

Work on show included painting, drawing, photography and film works produced during the WYA summer residency.
