Rika Nakashima is an artist working with installation, performance and sound. Their practice reflects on the social, political and economic systems that split public and private, visible and invisible, life and death. Revealing the porous threshold between these binaries, Nakashima’s layered installations, often inspired by traditional Japanese rituals, uncover gestures of resistance hidden in the everyday.
Rika Nakashima lives and works in Tokyo. Recent projects include Oh My Head, TALION GALLERY, Tokyo (2024); INTERSTICE, le ventre, Hégenheim (2024); and I tower over my dead body, Gallery TOH, Tokyo (2021). She has presented performances at Atelier Mondial, Basel (2024); General Museum, Ramania Halal Supermarket, Tokyo (2023); and Goethe Institut Tokyo (2022). Her curatorial projects include 脱衣所-(a) place to be naked, Tokyo (since 2022) and INTERSTICE, Hégenheim (2024). Nakashima has been an artist-in-residence at Atelier Mondial, Basel (2024) and Art Action UK (2021).
This residency is in partnership with Japan House, London.
