The festival has been co-designed with Wysing’s Creative Youth Council, especially for other young people. The CYC are a group of young people who meet regularly at Wysing to work with artists and develop creative projects.
Why should I come?
Do you enjoy being creative? Do you like making things, or trying stuff out just for fun?
Maybe you want to make new friends and meet other people like you, who share your interests?
Or maybe you want to find new ways to develop your creative portfolio, expanding your skills with a new technique, a different material or process?
Would you like to meet and work with professional artists and find out more about what they do?
The youth festival is a space to be playful, it will give you the chance to explore and experience different kinds of art and share your creativity.
Plus, being involved in the arts has been shown to have a positive impact on wellbeing. Creativity enables people to have a sense of belonging, and the youth festival at Wysing is a great opportunity to enable you to feel connected with your own creativity, nature, and other people.

Access & Reasonable Adjustments
A calm, quiet room is available onsite.
Accessible parking and toilets are available.
Please get in touch if you'd like a site visit prior to the event.
If you have other access requirements or educational needs that you would like to check with us before booking, please get in touch with Michaela D’Agati, Young People’s Programme Coordinator at Michaela.dagati@wysingartscentre.org and we will be happy to help.
Please be aware that while we try to offer access and reasonable adjustments wherever possible, we are not a specialist or alternative provision provider and do not have specialist staff to support complex needs. We are always very happy to discuss what we can make possible in our programmes and where we can work together; it is our priority to ensure the young people we work with are safe and happy.
Health, Safety and Wellbeing
We want to support young people to have the freedom to explore creativity, independently.
We ask the parent/guardian/youth worker/group lead to specify if they are happy to allow the young person(s) to explore our rural site freely.
Please be aware that Wysing is an open site (i.e., not enclosed by walls or fences). We are set in 11 acres of rural land with fields and woodland and an open entrance way onto a ‘B’ road. We ask you to take this into consideration when booking.
To help you make this decision we have provided a risk assessment that specifies what we are doing to ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of young people at the event.
You can download our Risk Assessment here.
Wysing Arts Centre is committed to providing a safe environment for all children, young people, and vulnerable adults and their safety and welfare is paramount to the organisation when they visit or work with us.
You can download our Safeguarding Policy here.
We have an organisational Code of Conduct for you to read before visiting Wysing.

Led by artist Niki Colclough, the group were encouraged to create, play and connect with the more-than-human world around us through a series of sessions including:
- Using collages and concrete poetry to connect to nature
- Forrest Bathing in the meadows
- Foraging for blackberries and making our own cordial
- Creating a collaborative soundtrack using field recordings from across the site
- Building our own, unique candle holders out of terracotta clay
- Experimenting with imprinting natural objects into clay
- Reflecting on walking as an artistic practice and playing walking games
- Designing and decorating placards with hopes for our future or messages about the environment
- Making a psychogeography map of Wysing’s site
We concluded the week with a celebration ritual of our own invention. We decorated our chosen nature spot in the Wysing woodlands with the work we’d made, drank the blackberry cordial and lit our ceramic candles to celebrate all we’d achieved.
Click here to listen to the audio work which the young people produced during the Summer School. Content warning: The audio contains high pitched tones and sounds of flies buzzing, with loud screams in the second half.

Wysing Arts Centre and St Peter’s School, Huntingdon, are delighted to announce an exciting new partnership that sees artist Rafal Zajko collaborate with 270 Year 7 students to create a significant new public art commission based around their desires for the future. The artist was selected by the students back in June, the resulting artwork will be presented at St Peter's School and at Wysing Arts Centre in September 2023.
So far, the students have been invited by Rafal to use drawing, collage, and creative writing to imagine what they might like to protect or change for the future. They have designed time capsules, and used Artificial Intelligence to explore the future of living, working, learning and farming in Huntingdon. The creative invitations draw on the artist’s Polish working-class roots, his family history of working in fields and factories, and his resulting fascination in the relationship between the body and technology.
The project has developed through a long-standing relationship between St Peter’s School and Wysing Arts Centre, where artists have been delivering a creative workshops programme in school and at Wysing since 2019. This new way of working will enable better links between the school community at Wysing, with a family celebration planned at the school and part of the commission featured at Wysing Arts Centre. We hope that the project can set a model for future school and arts organisation engagement in the region and beyond.

About St Peter’s School
At St Peter’s we believe that, as educators, we can and must make a difference to the lives of the young people in our care. We work to ensure that the school enables our students to maximise their potential whatever their ability, background, culture or belief. We have high expectations and aspirations for all our students, and we work to prepare them fully for the future beyond our school, recognising, nurturing and celebrating individual skills and talents
St Peter’s School are delighted to be able to offer all year 7 students the opportunity to take part in the Learn, Aspire, Exceed (LAE) Curriculum. The LAE curriculum has been specifically tailored for St Peter’s students to give them an opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills outside of the normal curriculum. The LAE curriculum is purely focused on inspiration which nurtures our ‘Learn, Aspire, Exceed’ philosophy, making learning a joy. The majority of the Wysing Art sessions will be part of the Learn Aspire Exceed Curriculum.
St Peter’s School believes that this extended curriculum gives opportunities for students to enhance their learning and the different job roles and responsibilities associated with more practical work. Research shows that participation in extra-curricular activities can positively impact on attainment, increase a pupil’s positive identification with school, and build self-confidence and resilience. Research also shows that children that do not have access to these opportunities fall behind, lack confidence, and fail to develop career aspirations.
This Wysing Art project will play a significant part in inspiring our future students to become engaged in extracurricular activities. This project will also impact our student leaders and our Art Ambassadors across all years by supporting the development of their leadership skills, and support further communication between the school and the community which is crucial for the development of the school in further years.
Join us for Wysing’s first ever youth festival - a celebration of creativity in all its forms! During the day you’ll get the opportunity to take part in lots of different creative workshops and activities with artists: including inspiring make-up tutorials, collaborative storytelling games, and experimental sound workshops.
You can meet friends, get involved in a tour of augmented reality artwork created by Wysing’s Youth Council, and see an amazing new installation by artist Uma Breakdown!

Get creative, make friends, be wild and have fun over the summer at Wysing Arts Centre. Join the summer school at Wysing to collaborate with professional artists and each other. Over the week you’ll have a chance to create work using nature, sound and performance.
For booking details, please visit our Eventbrite by clicking here.
The week will seek to remove barriers and expectations to explore how we can be free to imagine, taking part in practical activities that link to Wysing’s 2022 theme of “re/wilding”. Explore what it might mean to take time away from the day-to-day, to roam land freely and test out what you might want to leave behind or allow to flourish through engaging and inspiring creative activities.
The week will investigate ideas around the environment, recycling and shaping the world of the future. For example building sculptures in the woodland, creating with clay, playing with field recording and sound editing, and putting together a final online display of collaborative work as part of the Wysing Broadcasts website.
The week will involve opportunities to work in a group and individually.

The #WysingChallenge
The #WysingChallenge asked you to use recycled materials to share an idea or invention that might help improve the world, e.g. a solar-powered computer, small acts of kindness, calling a friend, wind-powered tree planter.
Background
The exhibition 'Difficult Truths' presents some of the concerns around mental health, bullying and climate change. We now want to invite families, young people and artists of any age to respond to this in our #wysingchallenge. During February 2020 Creative Circuit Huntingdon invited artists age 11 – 18 across Cambridgeshire to respond to the theme of Difficult Truths through an open-call.
Work will be displayed in 2020 on the Difficult Truths exhibition website. To view the website, click here.
The exhibition developed through members of Creative Circuit Huntingdon initiating the idea of developing an exhibition of young people’s work at Wysing.
The group have worked with Wysing studio artist Damaris Athene to develop the theme and call out for the exhibition, resulting in wide-ranging discussions across thought processes, different perspectives and dystopias. The theme of Difficult Truths was chosen by the group to reflect issues young people face including concerns around climate change, mental health, bullying, fake news and the challenges of identity in the age of social media. Creative Circuit Huntingdon want to open out conversations around difficult subjects that are often not discussed, and hope that sharing these ideas through art work can inspire others to talk more.
Artists age 11 – 18 are invited to continue to submit work to the exhibition digitally. For more information and to submit work, please click here.

Kettle's Yard
As part of Kettle's Yard's reopening exhibition Actions, Circuit Cambridge have created an accompanying film that examines some of the emerging themes through artist interviews.
We are a collective of 18-25 year olds who come together to experience making art and are passionate about sharing it with others.
We have been working with Kettle’s Yard and Wysing Arts Centre to make a short film, which is on show in at the reopened Kettle’s Yard from Saturday 10th February.
The film is about the Actions exhibition, the artists’ methods and the place their work has in the wider world. With three questions about: reacting; taking action; and looking for a response; we are hoping to give audiences an insight into the processes they don’t normally see.
We worked with artists to plan, shoot, direct, produce and edit the film. We learnt new skills and shared existing skills in the group including animation, interviewing, cinematography and music composition.
Following the completion of the Actions film, we are now involved in new, exciting projects. If you are interested in our work: we will be hosting a workshop in the Actions Late at Kettles Yard (Fri 2nd March, 6-9pm)- come and meet us. You can follow the process on our social media. If you are aged 18-25, join us at one of our weekly meetings and bring your creative ideas.
We work with Kettle’s Yard and Wysing Arts Centre on activities including workshops, exhibitions, films, performances, live music and lots more!
If you’re 18-25 years old, like being creative and want to meet people and learn new skills, Circuit is for you.

Aid & Abet (Artists Sarah Evans and David Kefford) invite you to participate in a workshop that explores the relationship between two things - discovering the new narratives that arise when you place one thing against another.
By keeping it simple there is an opportunity to scrutinize how things shift when you introduce one element to another. Aid & Abet want you to join them to play and experiment with the creative possibilities.
The session will work back and forth between drawing/collage and animation.
In collage there will be a focus on overlapping, joining and attaching to make new compositions. In animation simple loop cycles will be made through drawn animations and stop motion animations made with collages, drawings and found objects.
Circuit Art Socials are relaxed events with free food and drink. You can take part in a free artist-led activity or just hang out in a creative space with friends.

Beyond the Brick is a group exhibition including work by Kyle Warwick, Jamie O’Brien, Kienan Naylor and Kieran O’Brien.
The group of young artists whose practices range from photography, screen printing and tattoo art, are aged between 16 and 24. As members of the Girton Youth Project, they have spent the past four months preparing for Beyond The Brick exhibition. The group describe the main body of work as ‘urban art’ – art inspired by street youth culture and created using screen printing, painting, graffiti and photography.
The young artists have not taken the usual educational route into their creative practice, instead they have found inspiration from the rest of the world, their connection being through street art, urban art, culture and Graffiti.
The work includes photography, screen print, video and tattooing.
The project is curated by artist and former Circuit Cambridge member, Jack Cornell.
Private view, open to the public, on Friday 26 May at 6pm. The exhibition continues on the 27 and 28 of May.

Explore different ways of looking and different ways of displaying artwork. The workshops involve opportunities to make your own camera or interface, and to create a lot of artwork (including drawing, collaging and sculpting) which can be taken away with you.
The workshops are led by exhibiting artist Takeshi Shiomitso, and our young people's group Circuit Cambridge, and are for young people aged 15-25. You don’t need any previous experience – so if you’re interested in getting creative, working with an artist or you would just like to meet new people - come along, you can join for one or both days.
FREE transport from Cambridge City Centre is available – please CONTACT US to book travel. Please bring along a packed lunch.
The workshops are free but booking is essential BOOK HERE
In this workshop we’ll be unlocking Wysing’s current gallery exhibition using printmaking, sculpture, collage and writing - exploring words, ideas, patterns, shapes, symbols, and sounds. In the afternoon we’ll collect together all our ideas and creations to create a group publication.
Are you currently studying for your CGSEs or A Levels? Work taken away from the day can be used in sketchbooks and we'll be looking at contemporary art works and artists that can be used as source & supporting material for your coursework.
The workshop is led by artist Isabella Martin, and our young peoples group Circuit Cambridge and is for young people ages 13-25. The session is free but booking is essential. Please bring a packed lunch.

13 July to 23 August
The third Leverhulme Arts Scholars Summer School at Wysing Arts Centre, with Scholars Chris Alton, Calum Bowden, Gordon Douglas, Henry Driver, George Harding, Emily Hawes, Steph Li, Helen Savage, Sophia Simensky, Ben Tupper, Jules Varnedoe, Nathaniel Whitfield took place 13 July-23 August 2015.
Click on the image above for a slide show of the artists' final presentation of work at Wysing.
The Summer School is aimed at artists aged 18-25. This year scholars’ work sits between artistic disciplines and they have a strong transdisciplinary approach to their practices. Scholars will take Wysing’s artistic programme across 2015, The Multiverse; a theory that proposes the potential for multiple universes as a starting point for their artistic research over the six week summer school.
The Leverhulme Arts Scholars Summer School offers an opportunity to work alongside other artists and peers to critique, discuss and develop individual art practices, and make new work with the opportunity for a public presentation at Wysing. The programme also offers opportunities for discussion and research visits. During the Summer School Wysing will be hosting the arts organisation Electra in-residence and there will be an ongoing events programme curated by Electra that scholars will be able to attend. Electra curates, commissions and produces projects by artists working across sound, moving image, performance and the visual arts. At the heart of their practice is a process-based relationship between artist, curator and audiences, which seeks to give the projects space to find their own rhythm, public outputs, and discourse.
Electra's core aim is to foster a dialogue between a range of disciplines of contemporary artistic practice, to provide a platform for debate and engaged dynamic investigations of urgent social, political and cultural questions. Projects include: Someone Else Can Clean Up This Mess (Flat Time House, 2014-15); Her Noise: Feminisms and the Sonic (Tate Modern, 2012); Sound Escapes (Space 2009); The Wire 25 (2007).

Circuit Cambridge is the young people's programme at Wysing Arts Centre & Kettle's Yard. Circuit Cambridge is part of the national Circuit programme, led by Tate and funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
This exhibition, curated collaboratively by Circuit Cambridge, explores artist Henri Gaudier-Brzeska’s constantly changing drawing styles through a selection of his sketches of birds. Over the course of three months, the group selected works from the collection at Kettle’s Yard that provide an insight into Gaudier-Brzeska’s evolving style – from a realistic and naturalistic depiction to abstract form, with heightened emphasis on the shapes created by the movement of the pen across the paper.
These drawings reflect the artist’s personality, his artistic development and the progression of the age. Gaudier-Brzeska aligned himself with the avant-garde Vorticist group in London. Many of its members responded to the increasing dominance of machines within their environment by trying to capture this movement within a static image.

About the film:
The Way to Cambournia
The Circuit group is currently collaborating with artist Rebecca Birch on The Way to Cambournia, a film made in Cambourne. The making of the film involves a series of interventions, requiring cooperation and encouraging contribution from the Cambourne community. The film will be screened at an outdoor evening event in July 2014 in Cambourne and will include performance, food, and live music.
Circuit have spent five weeks exploring Cambourne through mapping and engaging local residents in conversations, and have noticed and been thinking about thresholds in the town - for example between new urban spaces and existing countryside or between public and private spaces. Circuit are interested in the surreal nature of this new town that hasn’t yet had time to evolve and grow, and has instead been created by planners. We noticed many blank spaces for which narratives have yet to be made.
This curiosity about Cambourne led the group to decide to make a film about living in the town and through the filming process they aim to explore creative ways of making contact with residents.

If you are aged 15-25 and interested in getting creative come and join us on Saturday 31 May, 4 - 6 pm, for an afternoon of free drop-in printing and sculpture workshops led by artists Juneau Projects and the Circuit group. Inspired by the current exhibitions Hey, I'm Mr Poetic and I am the warrior, you’ll have the opportunity to create fashion prints and create an outdoor sculpture using both man-made and natural objects. We will supply all materials but you can bring any item of clothing you wish to print on.
The workshops are followed by the I am the warrior closing party - an evening of live acts and free food and drink, 6 - 9 pm. Join us for live performances, music, dance, and readings and a final chance to view the exhibition curated by Circuit and which includes contributions from Ben Arrowsuch, Tamires Gasparetto, Scarlett Holingworth, Hannah Kershaw, Amy Prebble, Ash Summers, Hayley Whittingham, Fergus Pain, and Juneau Projects. All are welcome – the event is free and there’s no need to book.
The Sounds of Cambridge and Related Pollinations was composed of a reoccurring shape, identified in pictures of the city. The interlocking coloured hexagons also carried a line drawing of where the contributed pictures were taken. Part of the work, which was presented alongside other projects including documentation on the Raspberry Pi collaboration, involved members of the Circuit group activating the sculptural piece.
Two of the young artists performed at the same time, each wearing hexagonal modules, with a third artist interacting and adding further shapes. It was hoped that the performances - or 'pollinations' would encourage further involvement by audience members.
To see more details about the exhibition and how the exhibition came together see here.

It helps young people in the Eastern region to develop their arts practice in a professional environment and includes workshops and mentoring by professional artists.
For the first time Wysing ran the WYA programme as a summer artist-in-residence scheme at its Bourn site in August 2012, giving young people a similar experience to the professional residency artists working there exploring the theme of The Mirror.
Over the month, 14 young artists had workshops with 10 different artists, used the gallery as their own group studio space and attended the same events as professional residency artists.
Young artists led the direction of the programme over the summer. Participating artist Alice Cole said “This experience has been very rewarding and I have learnt so much from it. It’s been an amazing opportunity to meet professional artists as well as other young artists. I’m really looking forward to our exhibition and the chance to show my work to the public.”
Work on show included painting, drawing, photography and film works produced during the WYA summer residency.

23 July — 24 August 2012
This summer, supported by J.P. Morgan and part of Plus Tate, young artists can take part in shaping and experiencing a parallel artist residency to The Mirror, Wysing’s professional artist summer residency. The residency ran 23 July – 24 August 2012 and young artists had the choice of which days to attend. Young artists had artist-led workshops, access to a studio space and the opportunity to curate an event as part of the professional residency.
The WYA in residence programme included the following:
• Two days of workshops introducing contemporary art by professional artists with studios at Wysing
• A one day workshop introducing The Mirror residency theme with Wysing’s curator and studio artists
• Weekly workshops focused on the residency theme, making work for exhibition and curating skills
• Access to a shared studio space at Wysing
• Trips to other Plus Tate galleries
• Opportunities to informally meet and interact with international residency artists as part of Wysing’s creative campus
• Opportunity to curate an event as part of the professional residency
• Opportunities for public presentation of your work
• Opportunities to undertake and complete Silver or Gold Arts Award
The fee for this programme is £120. However we don't want this be a barrier to low income families and both subsidised and free places are available with travel bursaries supported by the Ernest Cook Trust.
